ReCreate
ReCreate is a campaign initiative that integrates technology and gamification with the goal of motivating communities to recycle.
Design Challenge:
Recycling is often an individualized effort and people are simply not interested in recycling. Most citizens are unaware of processes after recyclables have been collected.
Design Solution: A community-based platform where people can vote on new infrastructure for their community. Recycling bins will be placed around the community where members can donate recyclables that will be melted down and transformed into the voted infrastructure.
Why? This proposal allows cost savings for the community. It also enables communities to come together.
Project Role: User Experience Researcher, Concept Designer
Client: The City of Stratford, University of Waterloo
Team Members: Jennifer Rodriguez, Pedja Ristic, Ana Marosevic, Gareth Wan
Activities: In-person interviews, user surveys, testing
Logo Development:
User Testing
For our first test, we wanted to measure recycling motives. We placed empty bins across campus. One box had a sign stating “Fill this box with recyclable bottles to win FREE PIZZA”. In 5 days this box was filled in comparison to the other boxes. We found that 79% of users are motivated to recycle if there is an incentive.

User Surveys
After receiving 50+ survey entries, we created a mind map to connect common themes. These themes were used to develop the recycling concept. We were inspired by inclusivity, gamification, and the idea of giving back to the community.

Flow Analysis
The flow analysis was used to visualize how items can be recycled. Our intial idea included 3D printers for repurposing plastic. We conducted secondary testing to discover potential vendors and the cost of repurposing used plastic.
